Release[edit]
The single was released in three versions: the Limited Editions A and B and the Regular Edition; the limited editions came with a DVD featuring a music video, but contained only two different songs on the CD in comparison to three on the regular CD-only edition.[2][3]
Songs and music videos[edit]
Title track[edit]
The title track praises the nobility of labor;[4] the lyrics repeat 'Hatarakō, hatarakō' (働こう, 'Let's work!').[5] The lyrics were written by Kenji Otsuki,[6] the music and arrangement were by Ian Parton from the UK band The Go! Team.[1]
The music video for the song features the five group members working in an office in so-called 'energy-saving suits' (省エネスーツ) and on a construction site in workwear.[4] The 'energy-saving suits' are half-sleeve tropical salaryman suits, worn with short-sleeved open-necked shirts; this kind of suit was heavily promoted by the Japanese government in the 1970s as a means to save energy on air conditioning at the time of the oil crisis.[7]
B-sides[edit]
The B-side 'Santa-san' was produced by Kenichi Maeyamada, who had written for Momoiro Clover such trademark songs as 'Ikuze! Kaitō Shōjo', 'Coco Natsu',[4] and 'Z Densetsu: Owarinaki Kakumei'.[8]
The Regular Edition also features a third song titled 'Bionic Cherry', which was a theme song for the movie Salvage Mice.[9]
Promotion[edit]
The promotional campaign for the single included a competition titled 'Momoclo Painting Contest'; the group announced that it needed a different promotional poster for each of 47 prefectures and invited people to submit their works.[10]

The title track 'Rodo Sanka' was premiered live on the rooftop of the From Chūbū building in Tachikawa, western Tokyo; the group wore 'energy-saving suits'.[11] The concert was held on November 3 and included a total of 13 songs plus 3 for an encore.[11]
Reception[edit]
The CD single debuted in the 4th place of the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart;[12] the limited edition B was the highest selling of the three in that first week of sales.[13] In 2012, fans voted 'Santa-san' to number one on the Momoiro Clover Z Request Countdown, aired on Space Shower TV on August 31, 2012.[14][15]

Background information[edit]
Pray/XXX is the thirteenth single by JapaneseR&B duo Soulhead; the single was their fourth and final single before the release of their third studio albumNaked.[2] It charted at #22 on the Oricon Singles Charts, becoming their highest charting single;[3] the single was a double a-side, with both 'Pray' and 'XXX' containing music videos.
'Pray' was written by the members and sisters of Soulhead, Yoshika and Tsugumi, with production being done by Octopussy. The song contained many R&B elements, mixing in elements of pop and rap. Being the main focus of the single, the outfits they wore in the music video were the same outfits they donned on the single's cover..[4][5]
'XXX' was also written by Yoshika and Tsugumi, with Octopussy producing the song. The track featured singer-songwriterKumi Koda, who was in the process of releasing her 12 Singles Collection at the time.[6] Musically, 'XXX' is a dance song that borrows numerous musical elements such as R&B;[7] the song borrows a 4-bar melody from the Missy Elliott and Rockwilder's remake of 'Lady Marmalade,' which featured singers Missy Elliott, Mya, Pink, Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera.[8] The song is sung in half Japanese and English.
'XXX' was the variation of the single 'D.D.D,' which was released by R&B-turned-pop artist, Koda Kumi, in December 2005.[9] 'D.D.D.' credits Soulhead as the featured artist and was inspired by groove music.[10]
Much like their other singles, Pray/XXX was also released as a vinyl.[11]

Music video[edit]
'Pray' featured many elements in the video which were most popular during the 1990s music scenes - with fast-forwarding and slowing down for many segments - and mixed those with modern-styled shoots. The outfits featured in the music video's church scenes were those Soulhead wore on the cover of the single.[12]
'XXX' was the alternate version to 'D.D.D.,' which had Kumi as the main focus. 'XXX' did not contain as much sexual imagery during the rapping, instead featuring the imagery with Yoshika and Tsugumi throughout the song and removing Kumi's solo dance segment.
